Outreach Opportunities for Social Ministry at
Messiah Lutheran Church
Special Benevolence: Donations by members of the congregation directed to a different non-profit agency each month.
“Souper” Bowl of Caring: Nationwide movement that unites schools,
congregations and community organizations in the fight against hunger.
Super Bowl Sunday donations of money and canned goods are collected and
delivered to a local agency to aid in that fight against hunger.
Loose Change Sunday: A special donation collected on the 1st Sunday of
each month. Funds are used to purchase lunch items for the Eleanor
Kennedy Shelter every two months.
Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP): Neighbors from
different faiths, cultures, and ages, walk together to take a stand
against hunger in our world. Funds are raised by walkers and their
sponsors to assist people in need around the world. Up to 25% of what
a CROP Hunger Walk raises remains in the local community.
Nurturing Parenting Dinner: Members of Messiah prepare and serve the
evening meal to families attending parenting classes sponsored by
Fairfax County Department of Family Services.
Noel Gifts: Each month, members are asked to
donate a variety of toiletries that are packaged into 400 Christmas
Bags for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and 50 gift bags for Eleanor Kennedy
Shelter for the homeless.
Sew Much Comfort: Part of a nationally recognized non-profit
organization providing adaptive clothing, free of charge, to wounded
service men and women. The group at Messiah meets Tuesday evenings
from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. You don’t have to be a sewer to join.
Tuesday Workshop: Meets every week from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. sewing quilts
for Lutheran World Relief and local homeless shelters and adult size
bibs, lap throws, and neck pillows for local nursing centers. You
don’t have to be a sewer to join.
Route One Community Kitchen (R.O.C.K.): A program sponsored by Mount
Vernon Churches and a local chapter #758 of the Elks. Some churches
provide the food and some churches provide servers. Messiah volunteers
to serve every Thursday.
Weekly Food Drive: Through out the year members may drop off donations
of canned and packaged goods to be delivered to United Community
Ministries for their Food Pantry.
Back to School Drive: During the month of August we collect a variety
of school supplies that are delivered to United Community Ministries to
aid in their effort to get the children in our community off to a good
start for their school year.
Share the Joy: Opportunity for Messiah members to provide Christmas gifts
to the less fortunate in our community. A Christmas tree decorated
with tags recommending various gifts which are then delivered for
distribution by United Community Ministries, a non-profit agency in the
Mount Vernon community working with individuals and families seeking
emergency assistance or experiencing homelessness.
